6 Fun Activities to Do with Your Chihuahua - Chihuahua Owners Guide
Whether you’re a happy chihuahua owner or planning on adding one to your family, you’re in the right place to learn more about how to care for these amazing dogs. Chihuahuas are pretty different from the typical small dog. They might weigh the same, but their attitudes and interests definitely tend to lean more cat than dog.
In this article, we’re going to talk about all the fun things that Chihuahua owners like you to do with their tiny dogs. So, buckle up and get ready for some tiny, yappy adventures!
1. Going on Walks (Unless It’s Raining):
Chihuahuas may be small, but they still need exercise like any dog. And what better way to get some fresh air and bond with your furry friend than by going on walks together? Whether it's through the park, around the neighborhood, or even just in your backyard, walks are a great way to spend quality time with your chihuahua.
If it’s stormy outside, just take a rain check. Some chihuahuas don’t mind the cold, but put a sweater on them if it’s below 50 degrees.
2. Dressing Them Up:
Chihuahuas are already adorable, but why not make them even cuter by dressing them up? From tiny little jackets to superhero costumes, there's no shortage of options when it comes to dressing up your chihuahua. And, let's be real, who wouldn't want to see a tiny, yappy superhero running around? My dog falco might not enjoy the process of putting on a coat or sweater, but he needs one to stay warm in the winter. Getting them accustomed to wearing clothes is important if you plan on being outside often.
3. Chihuahua Playdates (small dog parks only):
Chihuahuas are social creatures, and what better way to socialize than with other chihuahuas? Whether it's at a local park, dog cafe, or even just in your own backyard, Chihuahua playdates are a fun and enjoyable way to spend time with your furry friend and other chihuahua owners.
Be cautious when introducing them to bigger dogs or new breeds. Chihuahuas themselves can get riled up, so make sure you know what triggers and calms your pup. Luckily for us, they are small enough to pick up in a pinch, but there’s no reason to risk it if your chi is more solitary.
3. Participating in Dog Shows:
For the more competitive chihuahua owners, dog shows are a great way to show off your furry friend's skills and personality. Whether it's obedience trials, agility courses, or just a cuteness contest, dog shows are a fun and exciting way to spend time with your chihuahua and show off just how special they are. Chihuahuas are fast and can be very good listeners, so agility could be a great fit. And most chis have the most adorable strut, so don’t be afraid to let them show off a bit.
4. Snuggling on the Couch:
At the end of the day, what could be better than snuggling up on the couch with your chihuahua pup? These tiny fur babies are known for their love and loyalty, and what better way to show your appreciation than by giving them all the snuggles they could ask for? Get them some cozy blankets and let them bundle up with you. My chihuahua Falco sleeps around 18 hours a day in his old age, so he’s definitely 100% couch potato.
5. Hosting a Chihuahua-Themed Party:
This suggestion is pretty silly, but I’ve enjoyed throwing a party for Falco every few years. Chihuahuas are social creatures and love to be around their owners. Why not host a chihuahua-themed party to celebrate these tiny fur babies? Invite your friends and their chihuahuas over for a fun-filled day of games, treats, and of course, lots of snuggles. If you don’t have any other chihuahua owners as friends, it might be a good time to make one.
6. Volunteering with Chihuahuas:
For chihuahua owners who want to give back, volunteering with Chihuahuas can be a great way to make a difference in the lives of dogs and their owners. Consider volunteering at a local animal shelter, working with therapy dogs, or even starting a Chihuahua rescue organization. Not only will you get to spend time with these amazing dogs, but you'll also be making a positive impact in your community.
